Touch the Sound

Touch the Sound is a documentary about Evelyn Glennie, a world class international solo percussionist, composer, and teacher. She is also almost completely deaf. The film is centred around an improvised recording session with her and Fred Frith in a massive derelict industrial building. The rest of the movie follows her around the world from Japan to New York to Scotland as she meets and performs with different percussionists along the way.

One of the many sublime moments includes a performance in a hip Japanese club where Glennie surprises her Conservatory-trained accompianists by playing the first number with chopsticks on an ashtray, dirty plate, wine bottle and Kirin beer can. The result is nothing short of magical.

Touch the Sound is currently playing at the Vancouver International Film Centre until January 26th. View the trailer here.
