The problem with having the ability to recognize great artwork, is also having the ability to label something a steaming pile. Usually the notion can be combated or questioned, as art is and always will be subjective; the exception to this however, is the artwork (if we can call it that) of Michael Godard, pieces that are the world’s best selling, but sadly the world’s least creative.
In an effort to sum up my feelings about this particular wannabe Artist I have taken the approach of documenting his work with a wannabe method; enter the cameraphone and images I compiled at Vancouver’s recently created “gallery” named “Oh my Godard.” I don’t know who’s buying this work, it is hideous. It neither follows nor breaks the rules of composition, color, or perspective; it just exists, sucking the braincells from its viewers and all the while doing a pretty rancid job of even that. Don’t trust my word though, visit it across the street from Tom Lee music, between Smithe + Nelson on Granville st..

When I popped my head in there recently I didn’t know who Michael Godard was, so I asked the salesman It’s more of a cheesy store than a gallery as teh singage claims). He told me that Godard was the top selling artist in the world. I told him he was the worst artist I’d ever seen and this was the biggest pile of poo I’d ever seen in one collection. Stunned, he said “Uh, are you an artist?” Yup. Silence. Not a word.
You really have to see this stuff to believe it. It should be on black velvet and hung in a 1970′s basement beside your uncle’s half assembled Harley Davidson.

Maybe, just maybe this stuff is hot in Vegas post a roulette win and countless free cocktails in effort to impress the shit out of your $100/hour escort. But in Vancouver it’s hard to see the business case for such a large and clearly expensive occupation of real estate. This is stuff that should follow the maxim, “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas…”

I never would have believed that there would be an artist that would dare to dream as large as Michael Goddard. After Thomas Kincaid “The Painter of Light”

no one can possibly come as close to realizing the vision of beauty that Goddard does. C’est magnifique!

Vancouver’s art culture is boring and stuck up. This is a new inviting style of gallery for a new genereration of artists and a new generation of people. It’s about time someone did something like this.

I happen to agree with most of the others. To be so critical of Godard’s art obviously puts you out of touch with what the public likes and expects. I used Godard throughout my restaurant/bar and people love him.

Being a big enough whore to buy a fancy car is not a way to determine talent.
