Future of Marketing: Smoking Stranger

The Future of Marketing Summit was on my mind the other night as I was looking for a spot to grab a beer with a friend. Leaning in the shadowy doorway of a new restaurant with a brightly coloured neon sign was a well dressed young man. Dangling from his fingers was a freshly lit cigarette that he casually took long pulls from as we passed. “What’s this place?” I said to my mate. “It’s new,” replied the stranger, thick sexy smoke wafting in front of his face, “it’s a bistro with an ecclectic menu and reasonable prices. Very hip atmosphere with old school service and a great chef.” If he wasn’t employed by the establishment, he should have been. His comments, combined with his image of uber cool, left an indellible mark on me and I am dying to go back and check the place out properly. Call it guerilla tactics or influence marketing if you want, I call it effective as hell. No advert, coupon or review would have caught my attention like this dark stranger did.
