I love discovering communication design that crosses cultural boundaries with multiple layers of meaning. Recently I was walking through Chinatown and noticed the marketing materials for a new condo development called East. The Chinese character for east has been used with English letters spelling out the same word inside the character.
Another great example of smart design is the Beijing 2008 Olympics logo. Not only does this graphic appear uniquely Asian with its character knocked out of its stylized red ‘chop’ and calligraphic typeface, but the dancing/running character ‘Jing‘ actually means “Capital”, a reference to the city of Beijing itself. Brilliant.
