1973 = Mars

life-on-mars

Not sure how this escaped our blog until now. For the last while many of us here have been afflicted with sleep deprivation as a result of having access to complete seasons of the best episodic television has to offer. Case in point: Life on Mars. Hmmm, where to start? Well, it’s a BBC production (almost always brilliant) and the premise involves a detective, Sam Tyler, in 2006 who has an accident and wakes up in 1973. The title comes from the classic Bowie song playing at the time of the accident. The title is fitting when you consider that dropping back 30+ years might be akin to travelling to another planet.

Brilliant acting, amazing set dec and props make this series. Alas, there were only two seasons, however a spin off just started this February. Ashes To Ashes features the same police department with many of the same cast, but has a female cop dropped into the 80’s. Police drama, psychological thriller, comedy and nostalgia all wrapped into one. The show might just have you wondering whether you’re watching tv, gone mad, in a coma or back in time…

According to Wikipedia the series almost never got made. Unfortunately an American remake is very likely.
